Every level ends at the flagpole. Every fourth level ends in a castle with Bowser. Complete all eight worlds to rescue the Princess.
World 1-1 teaches the core mechanics gently — the opening section has no enemies and plenty of coins to explain the block-hitting mechanic. The key habit to build early is jumping over enemies rather than trying to stomp everything. Clean movement is faster and safer than fighting every enemy.
Hidden 1-Up mushrooms exist in specific blocks throughout the game. World 1-1 has one above the staircase near the end. Accumulating lives before harder worlds is worth taking five seconds to collect.
